Mark Hurlbert
District Attorney Mark Hurlbert has been prosecuting in the Fifth Judicial District for thirteen years. Mark grew up in Summit County and graduated from Summit County High School. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Dartmouth College in 1991 and his law degree from the University of Colorado School of Law in 1994. After serving as an intern in the Fifth Judicial District, District Attorney's Office while in law school, Mark found his true calling was in prosecution.
Mark began his career in Eagle County as a Deputy District Attorney handling all the misdemeanor and traffic cases. From there Mark went on to being a felony prosecutor in Clear Creek and Summit Counties before being appointed District Attorney by then Governor Bill Owens in December 2002. In 2004, Mark was elected to the position by the people of the Fifth Judicial District.
As an experienced prosecutor, Mark knows it is important not to simply secure convictions, but to seek justice. He makes victims a priority and is dedicated to providing victims a strong voice in the justice system. Mark has made it a priority for the District Attorney's Office in the effective prosecution of sexual assault cases.
There are 11 attorneys and 36 staff working under Mark's leadership. They prosecute criminals, work on behalf of victims, teach public school students about the law, promote crime prevention, and many other things that all relate to the overall mission of the Fifth Judicial District, District Attorney's Office: to do justice.
During his time in the Fifth Judicial District, Mark has served on such varied boards as the Clear Creek County Advocates Board of Directors, the Family and Intercultural Resource Center Board of Directors and the C.A.R.E. Counsel. He currently serves on Summit Prevention Alliance, Community Corrections Board, is the Immediate Past President of the Colorado District Attorney's Counsel and is a member of Rotary. He also has taught classes on the prosecution of sexual assault throughout the country. Mark and his wife, Cathy, have two children, Jack and Cydney.
Scott Turner
Assistant District Attorney Scott Turner grew up in Kansas City, Missouri. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and his Juris Doctor from the University of Missouri--Kansas City. Scott graduated from law school in 1989. After law school, he worked at the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office in Kansas City for 3 years before going into private practice. Since moving to Colorado in 2003, he has worked at the District Attorney's Offices in the 9th and 4th Districts before coming to the 5th District.
Tamar Wilson
Chief Deputy District Attorney Tamar Wilson was raised a military brat and so lived everywhere from Germany to Alabama to ultimately Colorado. She graduated from high school when she was 16 and immediately went the University of Southern Colorado in Pueblo where she double majored in political science and sociology/criminology and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1998. Tamar went to law school at the University of Denver and graduated with her Juris Doctor in 2002. After law school, Tamar joined the Fifth Judicial District. She is currently the Chief Deputy District Attorney and Office Head in Clear Creek County, where she prosecutes all felony, juvenile, misdemeanor and traffic cases.
Braden Angel
Braden C. Angel was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, majoring in Political Science and Psychology. Mr. Angel moved to Colorado in 2004 and to Eagle County in 2007. He attended The University of Denver College of Law and received his Juris Doctor in May of 2007. Braden is currently a Deputy District Attorney in Eagle County Court, handling traffic and misdemeanor charges.
Michael Angel
Michael Angel is originally from Columbus Ohio, where he spent the first 18 years of his life. He graduated from Miami University, in Oxford Ohio, where he received his degree in 2002. He had a dual major in History and Psychology. In August of 2002 he began Law School at Wake Forest University School of Law in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Upon graduation from Wake Forest in May, 2005, he moved to Denver Colorado. Before coming to the Fifth District Mike's practice focused on federal white collar crimes and he also worked as a staff attorney for a non-profit corporation. He is currently a County Court Deputy District Attorney in the Summit County Office handling misdemeanor and traffic cases.
Mark Brostrom
Mark went to Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan for undergrad, double majored, and earned degrees in Music and Philosophy. He worked as a professional musician playing for several regional symphonies and as a jazz musician. To support himself through the summer after his first year at the University of Colorado School of Law in Boulder, Mark was the owner/manager of Michigan Imperial Paint, a company he founded to support himself during his first summer from law school. He graduated from CU in 2005 and started to work in the Fifth Judicial District in June 2006. He is currently the District Court Deputy District in Eagle handling felony and juvenile cases.
Anne FrancisAnne was born and raised in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. She graduated from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1995 with a B.A. in English. Being an English major, she decided to go to law school and graduated from the University of Denver College of Law in 2002. Anne started in the Fifth Judicial District Attorney's Office in July 2003. Anne started in Summit County prosecuting traffic, misdemeanors, and juvenile matters. She is now prosecuting felony and juvenile cases in Summit County.
Stephanie Fuqua
Stephanie Fuqua is a Colorado native. She graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2003, with a degree in Business, with an emphasis in Finance and Management. Stephanie attended law school at the University of Denver, and graduated in 2006 with her J.D. After graduation she worked for a private defense firm. In 2008, she joined the Fifth Judicial District, District Attorney's Office. Stephanie is currently a County Court Deputy District Attorney in the Summit County Office where she handles misdermeanor and traffic cases.
Ryan Kalamaya
Ryan Kalamaya was born and raised in Longmont, Colorado. He went to Longmont High School, and attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia on a baseball scholarship. At UVA, Ryan majored in Government and History (with Highest Distinction). He taught History and coached soccer for a year at Millfield School, a boarding school in Somerset, England, after college. He got his juris doctor from the University of Colorado School of Law in Boulder, where he was Class President. Ryan is currently a Deputy District Attorney in Eagle County court where he prosecutes misdemeanor and traffic cases.
Steven Mallory
Steve is originally from Bismarck, North Dakota. In 1996, he graduated from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, North Dakota with a degree in History. He went on and received his Masters of Arts in History also from UND in 1999. Steve started his law school career at the University of Akron School of Law in Akron, Ohio, but transferred after a year to the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon where he graduated in 2004. From law school, he went on to work as a Deputy District Attorney in the Twenty-Second Judicial District in Cortez, Colorado. In 2006, he came to work in the Fifth Judicial District. He is currently a District Court Deputy District Attorney handling misdemeanors and traffic in Eagle County. Steve is also the Eagle County Office Head.
Shasta Smith
Shasta is a Colorado native who grew up in Thornton. After graduating from Thornton High School, Shasta got her BA Speech Communications from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. In 1998, she received her law degree from the University of Wyoming in Laramie, Wyoming. From 1998 to 2001, she was in private practice as in house counsel with a collection agency in Nebraska. In 2001 she joined the Fourth Judicial District, District Attorney's Office in Colorado Springs, where she was a Deputy District Attorney until February of 2003 when she struck out on her own and started her own law firm. In August of 2005, she left her law practice to join the Fifth Judicial District, District Attorney's Office. Shasta is currently a Deputy District Attorney and Office Head in Leadville handling all felony, juvenile, misdemeanor and traffic cases.
Kristine Word
Kristine grew up on a farm outside of Okabena, Minnesota. She started college at University of Minnesota, Duluth, transferred to University of Minnesota, St. Paul, and graduated from South Dakota State University, Brookings, South Dakota with a B.S. in Psychology. Kristine worked as a Child Protection Specialist in Nicollet County (St. Peter), Minnesota for about a year and half before moving to Summit County at the end of 1994. From 1994 to August of 2000, she worked for Summit County Government as the child abuse investigator/intake worker for the Department of Social Services. In August of 2000, Kristine left Summit County to go to law school at DU. She graduated in May, 2003, passed the bar in October, 2003, and started with the District Attorney's Office in Arapahoe County, Colorado. In February, 2006, she came back to Summit County as the County Court Deputy District Attorney. She is currently assigned as a District Court Deputy District Attorney in Summit County, prosecuting both felony and juvenile cases. Kristine is also the Summit County Office Head.
