Mother Pleads Guilty in Vehicular Double Homicide of Own Daughters

EAGLE COUNTY, CO – Jenny L. Figaszewski, 46, of Arvada, pled guilty today to two class 3 felonies: Vehicular Homicide-DUI; and, Child Abuse Resulting in Death, related to a crash July 11, 2016. Defendant Figaszewski was driving on I-70 eastbound that afternoon, when her BMW sedan drifted onto the left median. The vehicle flipped two complete times, injuring her and killing two of Defendant Figaszewski’s four children (ages 14 and 9) who were riding in the car.

The surviving children, ages 7 and 5, were neither wearing seatbelts nor in child seats.

Figaszewski had taken methamphetamines just before beginning the fatal trip in California.

“This is a horrible tragedy. There is nothing worse than the death of a child. These children are not statistics and this plea is a public reckoning for the defendant,” said Bruce Brown, 5th Judicial District Attorney.

Figaszewski will be sentenced on May 7, 2018, to an expected term of 16 years in the Department of Corrections.

During 2017 there were 642 highway deaths in Colorado and 241 were attributed to impaired driving. (This is preliminary data according to Colorado State Patrol, see https://www.codot.gov/library/traffic/safety-crash-data/fatal-crash-data-city-county/2017-fatalities-by-region/view)
